Poo sandwich, anyone?

toasted sandwich with some melted cheese and lettuce visible and a row of poo emoji-style cupcakes right through the middle

Picture the scene: I’m rushing about trying to do a million things at once, backwards and forwards across the kitchen grabbing this and chopping that while thinking ahead to the next meal time. A quick glance down to the little shadow hovering beside me:

“What do you want on your sandwich?”

“POO!”

Once again, I’m about to roll my eyes and ask for his real answer, when I have an epiphany. He finds poo hilarious and I need to get him to listen and follow my instructions regularly. What if I use toilet humour to get him to do what I want?

This is the story of how I use POO to tap into my audience’s humour and influence their behaviour. So strap yourself in and listen up...

Oh my God! Is she gonna try and promote her copywriting services with a story about poo?

Yes. Yes she is.

Use words that make them laugh

Like lots of kids, my youngest thinks poo is very funny. And I’ve made an amazing discovery. If I chuck the word POO into what would otherwise be a very boring and serious-sounding instruction, he does what I want him to do [disclaimer: not all the time!] The result? Easier bedtimes. Less drama at meal times. Much less faffing when we leave the house.

“Time to put your POOS on.”

“Come and eat your POO now.”

✓ Smile formed

✓ Mood changed

✓ Silliness accomplished

✓ Mission complete

Being playful changes everything. It breaks down barriers, makes people relax and warm to you. It makes you relatable and likeable. And it works for brands as well as people.

Playful copywriting beats pitiful copywriting

Make ‘em laugh with your hilarious content and you’ll get them on-side. I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of boring, samey bullshit.

Any brand who gives me a giggle is instantly rewarded with my attention – whether that’s a follow on Insta, a click on someone’s website or a mental note that they’re one of the good ones.

If you’re looking for a writer who can woo your audience with genuine laughter, a bit of lighthearted silliness and the connection of shared humour, let me win them over with words that do for your audience what POO does for my kid:

  • Make them giggle.

  • Make them nod in agreement.

  • Make them stop, read, pay attention, click and buy what you have to offer.
